Big Speyside energy, turned up to 20 years. Mortlach’s known for a beefier, “meaty” style of single malt, and the extra ageing adds layers of dark fruit, toffee, and toasted oak with a savoury edge that keeps it interesting. If you like whisky with weight and depth, this one earns its shelf space!

Description

This is Speyside single malt for people who want more than honey and flowers. Mortlach has a famously muscular, savoury character, and at 20 years old it comes together in a way that feels deep, bold, and properly layered.

What you get here is that signature Mortlach heft, plus the long-aged payoff, richer sweetness, darker fruit, and oak that’s present without turning everything into a plank. It’s a confident whisky that doesn’t need to shout to be memorable.

  • Nose: Dried fruits (raisins, dates), toffee, polished oak, a hint of cocoa, and a savoury, stocky note that’s very “Mortlach.”
  • Taste: Dark caramel and baked fruit up front, then nutty chocolate, warm spice, and a chewy, weighty mouthfeel that feels almost brothy in the best way.
  • Finish: Long and warming, lingering on oak spice, toffee, and that lightly savoury edge that keeps pulling you back.

It’s a great pick if you’re bored of light, easy Speyside pours and want something with structure. The age shows up as cohesion, the flavours don’t feel separate, they feel stacked. Think dessert, wood, and a little umami, all in the same sip.

Also, it plays well as a centrepiece bottle for whisky nights. It gives you plenty to talk about without turning into a homework assignment, and it’s the kind of dram that can convert someone who says they “don’t like Speyside.”

Fun Fact: Mortlach is nicknamed “The Beast of Dufftown,” and it’s one of the only distilleries that became famous specifically for being big, savoury, and slightly wild for Speyside.
