Description

Buttery, bright, and way more interesting than your average Chardonnay, this Te Mata white wine is the kind of bottle that makes you pause mid-sip and go, “Yep, that’s the one.” It brings ripe fruit, a creamy feel, and a savoury edge that keeps you coming back.

What makes it worth your fridge space is the balance. You get that classic Chardonnay comfort, but it doesn’t flop into heaviness. Think freshness up front, richer flavours through the middle, and a finish that hangs around long enough to feel intentional.

New Zealand does “clean and vivid” incredibly well, and Te Mata leans into that energy while still keeping the wine layered. It’s an easy crowd-pleaser, but it’s not boring, there’s enough going on to reward a slow glass.

  • Appearance: Pale gold with a bright, clear look.
  • Nose: Lemon zest, ripe peach, gentle vanilla, toasted nuts, and a hint of warm pastry.
  • Taste: Stone fruit and citrus up front, then a creamy, lightly toasty centre with lively acidity keeping it snappy.
  • Body: Medium-bodied, round but not heavy.
  • Finish: Long, with lingering citrus, subtle spice, and a savoury, nutty echo.

If you’re stocking up on white wine that can do more than one job, this is a smart move. It’s the bottle you pull out when you want something comforting, but still fresh, and it plays nicely whether you’re pouring one glass or making a whole night of it.

Te Mata is one of New Zealand’s long-running estate producers, and they’ve been in the Hawke’s Bay wine scene since the 1890s, which is basically ancient history in New Zealand terms.

Fun Fact: Te Mata’s name comes from Te Mata Peak, the iconic hill overlooking Hawke’s Bay that shows up in basically every local “best view” argument.
