If you’ve ever wondered why Ribera del Duero gets wine people a bit twitchy with excitement, this is a very good place to find out. Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5° 2015 is a dry, full-bodied Spanish red from Castilla y León, made from Tempranillo and Merlot. Think dark fruit, firm structure, and enough polish to make dinner feel like you planned it days in advance, even if you absolutely did not.
This is not a shouty red. It’s layered. The Tempranillo brings black cherry, plum skin, tobacco and that savoury Spanish red wine grip. The Merlot rounds the edges, adding softer fruit and a plushness that keeps everything from getting too stern. If you like Rioja Gran Reserva but want something deeper, darker and more muscular, Ribera del Duero is the next door to open.
- Appearance: Deep ruby with a darker core, still vivid for a 2015 and looking very much alive in the glass.
- Nose: Black cherry, ripe plum, cedar, dried herbs, tobacco leaf and a little cocoa. Give it air and you’ll catch leather, spice and that lovely old-cellar thing collectors get weirdly emotional about.
- Palate: Dry and concentrated, with dark berry fruit, savoury spice, polished tannins and bright enough acidity to keep it moving. It has weight, but it doesn’t feel clumsy.
- Body: Full-bodied, structured and layered, with enough softness from Merlot to make the power feel controlled.
- Finish: Long and savoury, with black fruit, cedar, cocoa and a gentle mineral edge that hangs around after the sip.
- Food pairings: Roast lamb with rosemary, grilled ribeye, slow-braised short ribs, mushroom risotto with parmesan, or aged Manchego if you’re keeping things snacky but serious.
Pour this with food that has proper flavour. Roast lamb is the classic move, but it’s also brilliant with charred steak, duck breast, or anything mushroom-heavy where the wine’s earthy side gets to play. This is not your “open while cooking and forget about it” bottle. Sit down with it. Let it stretch out.
The 2015 vintage matters here because age has already done some of the hard work for you. The fruit has moved past simple freshness into darker, more savoury territory, while the tannins have had time to soften into something more graceful. You still get Ribera’s power, but it’s wrapped in velvet rather than wearing steel-toe boots.
Valbuena 5° is also a smart discovery bottle if you’ve been drinking big Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, or Rioja and want to level up without wandering into wine-speak nonsense. It gives you the satisfying depth of a bold red, but with more detail: cedar, spice, dried herbs, cocoa, dark fruit, and a finish that keeps changing after you swallow. That’s the fun part. It doesn’t give everything away in one sip.
Serve it slightly cooler than room temperature and give it some air before drinking. A decanter helps, but even a good swirl and a bit of patience will wake it up. This is the bottle to bring when someone’s cooking properly, or when you want to turn a quiet dinner into one of those “okay, what is this?” moments.
Fun Fact: Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864, and Valbuena 5° gets its name from the five-year ageing journey it goes through before release. Yep, the clue was hiding right there on the label.
