Description

Blackcurrant and cedar for days, this 2016 Saint-Julien is the kind of Bordeaux that instantly makes a steak taste smarter. It’s a Cabernet Sauvignon led, full-bodied red from France’s Left Bank (Médoc), built on firm tannins, savoury depth, and that clean, dry finish that keeps you reaching for another sip.

If you’ve ever wanted to “get” Bordeaux without memorizing a textbook, this is a seriously good place to start. It’s not a fruit bomb. It’s layered, structured, and weirdly addictive once you’re in the mood for something more grown-up than just jammy red.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby, edging toward garnet.
  • Nose: Blackcurrant and blackberry first, then cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, and a little dried herb.
  • Palate: Dry and full-bodied, with dark fruit held in check by grippy tannins and fresh acidity that keeps it lively.
  • Body: Full-bodied, structured, and unapologetically “food wine.”
  • Finish: Long, savoury, and cedar-spiced, with that classic Left Bank snap.

Food pairing, don’t overthink it: roast lamb with rosemary, ribeye with pepper sauce, or a mushroom ragù that leans hard into umami.

Discovery nudge: if you’re into Napa Cabernet but want more restraint and savoury complexity (less sweetness, more structure), Saint-Julien is one of the easiest Left Bank regions to fall for.

This is also a great “slow bottle”, pour a glass, let it breathe, and you’ll taste it get more relaxed and expressive as the night goes on. Basically, it rewards patience.

You’re buying a 2016 vintage, which matters because it’s one of those years people actually get excited about in Bordeaux, ripe fruit, solid structure, and the kind of balance that makes it worth cellaring if you’ve got the willpower.

Fun Fact: Château Talbot takes its name from John Talbot, an English commander tied to the region’s medieval history, which is why this very French wine has a very un-French name.
