Description

Big red cravings, sorted. This is a French Syrah that goes straight for the good stuff, dark fruit, black pepper, and a savoury edge that makes your next sip feel inevitable.

Syrah is the grape behind a lot of the world’s most satisfying, weeknight-friendly reds. The French take on it tends to feel a touch more structured and spicy, which is exactly why it works when you want a red that can handle real food (and not disappear next to it).

  • Appearance: Deep ruby, edging toward purple.
  • Nose: Blackberry and black cherry up front, then cracked pepper, a little dried herb, and a faint smoky note.
  • Palate: Dry, dark-fruited, and savoury, with firm tannins that give it grip and keep it feeling serious.
  • Body: Medium to full-bodied.
  • Finish: Peppery and persistent, with dark fruit hanging around after the swallow.

Food pairing:Put this next to pepper-crusted steak, lamb chops with rosemary, or a juicy burger with caramelized onions. It also loves hard cheeses like aged cheddar.

If your comfort zone is Australian Shiraz, this is the “same vibe, different accent” bottle, still bold and dark, but with a more savoury, peppery twist. And if you’re a Malbec regular, expect a similar depth of fruit, with a touch more spice and structure.

For serving, give it a few minutes in the glass before you go in. It softens the edges and lets the fruit and spice show up properly. This is also a solid “bring to a dinner” red because it plays nice with anything off a grill.

Calvet is one of the long-running names in French wine, the kind of producer that’s been putting everyday drinkers onto reliable French bottles for generations.

Fun Fact: Syrah is famous for tasting like black pepper because of a natural aroma compound (rotundone) that can show up in the grape, basically, the wine is doing the seasoning for you.
