Description

Big, dark-fruit Port energy without the fuss, this Cockburn’s LBV is the kind of bottle you open when dessert needs backup (or when you are the dessert).

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with a dense, inky core and slow legs that hint you are in for a rich ride.
  • Nose: Black cherry, blackberry compote, cocoa powder, sweet spice, plus a little raisin and walnut vibe as it opens up.
  • Taste: Plush dark berries and plum, with flavours of dark chocolate, baking spice, and a gentle grip that keeps the sweetness in check.
  • Body: Full-bodied and concentrated, built to feel like a proper after-dinner pour, not a one-note sugar hit.
  • Finish: Long and warming, with lingering cocoa, dried fruit, and a lightly peppery edge.

LBV stands for Late Bottled Vintage, which is basically your shortcut to that “serious Port” depth without waiting around for decades. You get layers, fruit, spice, and that cosy, rich warmth that makes the last sip feel like a mic drop.

This one comes from Portugal’s Douro Valley, where steep vineyards and hot days help grapes pack in flavour like they mean it. That matters because it shows up in the glass as concentrated fruit and real structure, not just sweetness.

How to drink it, keep it simple. Pour it slightly cool, give it a little air in the glass, and pair it with blue cheese, chocolate desserts, or a salty handful of roasted nuts. Also, it rules with a cigar if that’s your thing, and it makes a surprisingly great match for a cheesy movie night.

If you want to level it up, use it like a dessert sauce. A small splash over vanilla ice cream, or alongside dark chocolate, turns “nice” into “why didn’t we do this sooner?” fast.

Not sure when to open it, here’s the rule. Open it when you want something rich and layered but still fun, the kind of drink that gets everyone talking and pretending they can pick out the cocoa note (they can).

Fun Fact: Cockburn’s is famous for its “lagar” fermentation, grapes are traditionally trodden by foot in shallow stone tanks to pull out colour and flavour without smashing up the bitter stuff.
