Want a full-bodied red that feels plush, dark-fruited, and seriously satisfying without turning into a tannin wrestling match? Château La Croix Du Casse from Pomerol is that bottle. It’s Merlot-led Bordeaux, meaning you get richness and velvety texture first, with structure underneath to keep it classy.
- Appearance: Deep ruby, leaning garnet at the rim, the kind of colour that already hints at concentration.
- Nose: Ripe black plum and blackberry up front, then cocoa, espresso, and a warm cedar note that screams “Bordeaux, but make it plush.”
- Palate: Dark fruit, a touch of savoury spice, and tannins that feel fine-grained rather than drying. Dry, confident, and rounded.
- Body: Full-bodied, with that Pomerol softness that makes you want another sip.
- Finish: Long and lingering, with dark fruit fading into mocha and gentle oak spice.
Food pairing (mandatory and worth it): Pour this with roast lamb and rosemary, a pepper-crusted steak, or a mushroom risotto with plenty of Parm. The wine’s plush fruit loves savoury, browned flavours.
Pomerol is a small, famous pocket of Bordeaux where Merlot thrives, and you taste that in the texture. This is a great pick if you like bold reds but want something more polished than a big jammy Shiraz, or if you usually grab Malbec and you’re ready for a French upgrade with more nuance.
When to open it? Dinner that matters a little. Not white-tablecloth, just “we actually cooked.” Give it a bit of air in the glass, and it opens up from fruit-first to chocolate-and-cedar goodness.
Also, it’s a very easy way into “proper” Right Bank Bordeaux without feeling like you need to study a map first. You’re basically buying a texture, that velvety Pomerol feel, and letting the flavours do the flexing.
Fun Fact: Pomerol is one of Bordeaux’s tiniest appellations, and it famously has no official classification system, so reputations here are built in the bottle, not on a ranking list.
