Description

This is the red you reach for when you want flavour that shows up, not a wine that whispers. Drostdy Hof’s Tribute Cabernet Merlot from South Africa leans into bold dark fruit, a bit of savoury grip, and that classic Cabernet structure that makes a glass feel satisfying.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with a purple tint, looks rich in the glass.
  • Nose: Blackcurrant, ripe plum, a hint of dried herbs, and a faint cedar-like note.
  • Taste: Dark berries and plum lead the way, with medium tannins that add shape and a dry finish that stays clean.
  • Body: Medium-bodied, with enough weight to feel “red wine serious” without being heavy.
  • Finish: Dark fruit fades into a gently grippy, savoury tail that makes you want another sip.

Cabernet and Merlot is a combo for a reason. Cabernet brings the frame, that lightly drying tannin and blackcurrant vibe that works brilliantly with food, while Merlot rounds the edges so it drinks easily without feeling flat. So you get a South African red wine that’s confident, layered, and reliable when you’re serving a mixed crowd.

It’s also a handy “one-bottle solves the night” pick. Pasta with a meat sauce, burgers, mushroomy dishes, pizza, a roast chicken that accidentally got a little too much char, this wine doesn’t get precious about it. It just plays along.

If you like reds that taste like dark fruit first and oak second (not like a lumberyard), this one lands in a very drinkable zone. The tannins are there, but they’re not trying to start a fight, they simply keep things structured and food-friendly.

Fun Fact: Drostdy Hof is one of South Africa’s long-running wine names, and the “Drostdy” in the name nods to the old magistrate’s residence in Stellenbosch, a real piece of Cape wine history.
