Meerlust Rubicon 75cl

AED 220.00

Big, Bordeaux-style red with a confident South African swagger, this one’s built for people who like their wine layered and worth talking about. Expect dark cassis and plum up front, plus cedar, tobacco, and a little graphite on the back end. Dry, structured, and seriously food-friendly, it’s a classic Cape blend that feels polished without feeling precious.

Description

This is the kind of red you open when you want the table to go quiet for a second. South Africa’s Meerlust Rubicon drinks like a Cape take on Bordeaux, packed with dark fruit, savoury detail, and tannins that mean business (in a good way).

  • Appearance: Deep ruby to garnet with a concentrated look that hints at serious structure.
  • Nose: Blackcurrant, ripe plum, and blackberry, followed by cedar, dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and a pencil-shaving, graphite edge.
  • Taste: Dry and full-bodied, with cassis and dark cherry carrying through, grippy tannins for that mouth-coating “proper red wine” feel, and a fresh line of acidity that keeps it lively.
  • Finish: Long and savoury, lingering on dark fruit, cocoa, and cedar with a slow fade that makes you want another sip.

Why it works so well is the way it stacks flavours instead of shouting one note. You get fruit, then you get that leafy, cedar-and-tobacco depth, then the tannins come in and tidy everything up. So it doesn’t just taste bold, it tastes put-together.

If you’re building a red wine shelf that goes beyond easy-drinking weeknight bottles, Rubicon earns its spot. It’s the kind of South African red that rewards a bit of attention, the more you sip, the more it shows you.

It’s also a great “bridge” wine if you love Cabernet-led blends but want something with a distinct Cape identity. Same confident structure, but with its own earthy, herbal accent that makes it feel like a new find, not a copy.

Expect a firm, classic style, dark fruit, savoury lift, and a finish that sticks around. Basically, it’s a red wine for people who like complexity and don’t mind a little grip.

Fun Fact: Rubicon was first released in the 1980s and was bold enough at the time that it helped put modern South African fine wine on the global map.
