Description

Cherry fruit, a little earthy spice, and a tidy tannin grip, this Rosso di Montalcino is your fast track to what makes Montalcino such a big deal. It’s a dry Sangiovese red wine from Tuscany, Italy that brings Brunello-like structure, but with a more weeknight-friendly attitude!

If you’ve been stuck in the “Chianti is my Italian red” loop, this is a smart next step. Same grape family energy (Sangiovese), but from a place that tends to dial up the depth and savoury detail.

  • Appearance: Bright ruby red, clear and lively in the glass.
  • Nose: Ripe cherry and red plum first, then dried oregano, a hint of leather, and a dusty cocoa note.
  • Palate: Dry and medium-bodied, with bright acidity that keeps it fresh and food-ready, plus fine, grippy tannins that give it shape.
  • Body: Medium, not heavy, not flimsy.
  • Finish: Long enough to notice, with sour cherry, herbs, and a gentle savoury fade.

Food pairing: Pour it with tomato-based pasta (ragù, arrabbiata), grilled lamb chops, or a mushroom pizza with extra Parmesan.

This is also a great “bring to dinner” red because it’s confident without being bossy. It won’t bulldoze the food, but it won’t disappear either. Give it a quick swirl and a few minutes in the glass and it starts showing more of that classic Tuscan herb and spice character.

Wondering how it drinks compared to bigger-name bottles? Think of it like Brunello di Montalcino’s more casual sibling, still Sangiovese, still Montalcino, just less time waiting around and more time drinking.

On a random Tuesday, it’s your upgrade from basic pizza wine. On a weekend, it’s the bottle that makes a simple roast chicken and potatoes feel like a proper plan.

Fun Fact: Rosso di Montalcino is made from the same grape as Brunello (Sangiovese), and it comes from the same Montalcino zone, it’s basically your shortcut to the neighbourhood’s signature style.
