Blackcurrant, cedar, and that proper Bordeaux structure, this is Médoc doing its thing in a very drinkable 2017 vintage. If you’ve been buying random “French red” and hoping for the best, this is your upgrade, it’s a Cabernet Sauvignon-led Left Bank style that actually delivers the classic savoury edge people rave about.
Médoc sits on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where Cabernet Sauvignon tends to run the show. Translation: darker fruit, firmer tannins, and a savoury, slightly earthy backbone that makes food taste better. This is a dry red wine, medium to full-bodied, and happiest when there’s something delicious on your plate.
- Appearance: Deep ruby with a garnet hint at the rim.
- Nose: Blackcurrant and blackberry up front, then cedar, tobacco leaf, and a little graphite-like “pencil shavings” vibe.
- Palate: Dry and dark-fruited with bright acidity to keep it lively, plus firm, grippy tannins that feel made for food.
- Body: Medium to full-bodied.
- Finish: Long and savoury, lingering on cassis, dried herbs, and a touch of oak spice.
Food pairing: Pour this with ribeye or pepper-crusted steak, roast lamb with rosemary, or a proper cheeseburger (yes, really) and watch the tannins fall into place.
This bottle is also a great “Bordeaux 101” for anyone who likes the idea of red wine being more than just fruit. You get structure, you get savoury complexity, and you get a style that’s famous for a reason. Give it a bit of air in the glass and it opens up nicely, especially alongside dinner.
If your usual comfort zone is plush, fruit-forward reds like Shiraz, think of this as the more tailored option. Less jam, more blackcurrant and cedar. Still generous, just with better posture.
2017 in Bordeaux is known for making wines that can be enjoyed earlier without waiting forever, which is exactly what you want when the plan is “drink well tonight” instead of “cellar it and forget it.”
Fun Fact: Médoc reds are often called “Left Bank Bordeaux,” and that name is basically a shortcut for Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines with that signature cassis-and-cedar profile.
