Ripe red fruit, a little oak-kissed spice, and that classic Rioja savoury vibe, this is the kind of red you open on a Tuesday and suddenly dinner feels planned.
Torres Altos Ibéricos Crianza is a Spanish Rioja red made from Tempranillo, and it’s firmly in the dry, medium-bodied camp. “Crianza” is your clue that it’s had some proper time resting (including time in oak), which is why it tastes more layered than your average fruit-bomb red.
- Appearance: Deep ruby with a youthful purple tint.
- Nose: Ripe cherry and plum up front, then vanilla, cedar, and a hint of warm spice.
- Palate: Dry and juicy, with red and black fruit, gentle tannins (that light grip), and a savoury, slightly earthy Rioja twist.
- Body: Medium-bodied, easy to drink, still has structure.
- Finish: Medium length, with lingering berry, soft oak, and a touch of spice.
Food pairing: This is money with roast chicken, lamb kofta, or a mushroom pasta, anything that loves a bit of savoury depth alongside the fruit.
What you’re really buying here is balance. The Tempranillo brings the cherry-plum fruit, and the Crianza ageing rounds it out with vanilla and spice, so you get a red that can do both, sip on the couch and show up for dinner.
If your comfort zone is Malbec, this is a great next step. You still get that satisfying dark-fruit feel, but Rioja brings a fresher line and a more food-friendly savoury edge.
Bring it to a casual dinner, pour it with a board of manchego and chorizo, or keep it as your “always works” red when you don’t want to overthink the bottle.
Fun Fact: Torres is one of Spain’s most famous wine families, and their Altos Ibéricos range is all about spotlighting Spain’s star grapes, with Tempranillo in Rioja front and centre.
